Before going ahead, though, there's one more question you must ask yourself...

Look, it's tempting to think "Ok, now I've got a coach who will teach me all that I need to know. I can take it easy now."

But that's not how it will work out (nor should it).

You must be prepared to work harder than before. A good mentor will keep you busy. They'll give you assignments and demand that you follow through and participate actively.

If you're not ready to make that commitment, investing in a business mentor might not be for you at this point in time.

But if you are prepared to work hard, then take the next step in finding a mentor.

Take stock of where you are in your career.

Write down your business goals, and a time frame by when you want to accomplish them.

Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Note down areas you would like a mentor to help you with.

• Do you want to learn to pick HOT niche markets?
  
  
• Do you want to create products to sell in these markets?
  
  
• Do you want to attract many buyers and profit from them?
  
  
• Do you want your business processes optimized and automated?
  
  
• Do you want to embrace the right "Success Mindset"?

Be as detailed as you want. Then write down your biggest hurdles in the way to your success. What is holding you back?

• Are you lacking in confidence?
• Or knowledge?
• Having trouble finding the right niche?
• Don't know how to create products?
• Or does the thought of selling paralyze you?

You can evaluate a coach's skills, capabilities and experience by looking at their online presence, interacting with them on Twitter, Facebook or forums (even by private email), and maybe purchasing some of their products.

• How professional is their Web presence?
• Does it do a good job selling their products and services?
• Are there testimonials from their clients and colleagues?
• How experienced are they at online marketing?
• Do they have expertise in niches similar to ones you plan to enter?

After this, you must take a close look at the mentoring offer itself to see what it includes... and whether it suits your needs and expectations.

• Will the content be delivered by digital download, over the phone, or via webinar or personal contact?
• Will you have access one-on-one with the mentor, and how often?
• Will there be any limits, restrictions or unique requirements to be met?
• Will there be special discounts or expected price hikes in the future?

If these questions are answered, and you're still keen about being mentored by this person, proceed to the next step.

If possible, try and contact others who have been mentored by the teacher to enquire about the experience and results they got from their training from this mentor.

Even if you're not able to speak to or email them directly, you may find indirect clues from testimonials on the website. You might even see some familiar names on the list of past mentorees.

All of these are 'soft' factors in your decision-making process. But any useful information you can get will help you make an informed choice.

By now you have enough information to make an informed decision. That's when you take a "leap of faith" - and start working with your ideal mentor.

Remember, that's the goal of this entire process. To be mentored by an expert.

Don't take forever to analyze and over-think each step. You will never know how good or bad a particular mentoring program will be for YOU - unless you actually are in it for a while.

So you're looking to be reasonably informed, not "convinced beyond all reasonable doubt".

Let me tell you a little story...

Dad picks up Junior, sits him on top of a cupboard, holds out his arms to him and says: "Jump. Daddy will catch you."

The little boy shakes his head. "No, I'm afraid."

"Don't worry", says daddy. "I won't let you hurt yourself. Come on, don't be scared. Jump."

Junior's still not sure. He hesitates.

Dad smiles at him encouragingly, and says: "Son, I won't let you down. Come on now. Jump."

So he jumps... and daddy lets him fall!

Hurt by the sneaky trick more than the fall, his eyes filling with tears, Junior looks up and hears dad say:

"Son, never trust anyone again if they say they'll help you!"
