An infopreneur is an information entrepreneur. A person, typically a business owner, who uses information to craft resources that add value to an audience that is ready and willing to pay for access to it.
Profiting from information is a paradox. In a networked world that’s hooked up through the Internet, it may seem strange that it is even possible to profit from sharing information. But that’s because what is often presented as “information” is really raw data.
Data is meaningless by itself. And with the growing volume that is generated in the world, data by itself is growing more and more USELESS – unless it is analyzed, sifted, sorted, contextualized and massaged into a form that adds value to the consumer. In other words, data needs to be first converted into information in order to be useful.
An infopreneur does this important work. An Internet infopreneur searches for relevant data, analyzes it carefully, and presents it cohesively to a target market who can then put the information to use quickly and easily.
Expertise and Infopreneurs
Let’s take an example. In building an online business, there are many variables involved. And at the warp speed at which technology evolves and changes, these variables are in a constant and rapid state of flux. Hapless beginners to the exciting arena of online business are bewildered, confused and frustrated at this change.
An infopreneur who serves this market can add value through studying these changes, thinking about them in the context of an entrepreneur who is building an online business, and then presents the material in a narrative which explains and illustrates what the changes mean to that business owner or marketer.
The benefit to the entrepreneur who consumes this information is then:
* not having to search for, collate and study the raw data
* acquire (or seek out) the expertise needed to place the data in context
* think over the impact of each change on their business
* keep repeating the process as often as the data changes
For the time, effort and uncertainty they will save, the business owner will gladly pay the infopreneur who does these things before serving up useful information!
An Infopreneur’s Role
Infopreneurs are specialists in a niche. And on various sections of this blog (as well as in my own information products for infopreneurs) you will see me emphasize how EVERYONE is already an expert and specialist in some things.
Infopreneurs are a caring and concerned lot who wants to make things easier, better and effective for their audience or market. It is this desire to create change for the better in the lives and work of their customers that drives infopreneurs to create information resources of value to them.
Infopreneurs are critically analytical, clearly expressive and cleverly concise in presenting masses of raw data in the form of clear and brief information that entertains, inspires or educates.
To put it in a nutshell, an infopreneur delivers value to clients by creating information products or resources that provide inspiration, entertainment or education about specific topics or subjects that they are passionately interested in and expert at.
Can Anyone Become An Infopreneur?
Yes. It is well within the scope of anyone to become an infopreneur. And with the pervasive growth of the Web, and the continuously falling cost of technology combined with the growing power and simplicity of tools to create content, it is well within the capabilities of anyone to become an infopreneur.

- Creating music or audio content and distributing it has grown fast and simple with services like podcasting and Internet radio.
- Recording and sharing video has taken off with powerful computers and camcorders coupled with the reach of YouTube and other similar services.
It has never been a better time to become an Internet infopreneur.
And through this blog, and my various information products, I teach thousands of eager and curious information marketers how to turn words into wealth and build a profitable business that they enjoy and have fun with – based on things they already know.
