ABOUT DR.MANI's NON-PROFIT WORK
By 2011, The Dr.Mani Children Heart Foundation raised a little over $130,000 and sponsored heart operations for 80 children with congenital heart defects from under-privileged families. Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian launched the organization with an ambitious goal - to make high-quality heart health care accessible and affordable to every Indian child. Nearly 2500 children die every day from congenital heart defects. 500 of them live in India. With early detection and treatment, many can be completely cured. They will return to normal, healthy, productive lives. Be active members of their community and society. Become parents, even grand-parents. Sadly, most cannot afford the steep cost of healthcare. Heart surgery is expensive. Without it, CHD is often fatal. So Dr.Mani decided to try and help sponsor the operations. The problem was...how to do it. Each operation still costs $2,500. A part of this is subsidized by State Government grants. Dr.Mani decided to raise the remaining amount in 2 ways - through donations, and by contributions from his growing information business. Charitable donations from a donor base of over 1,000 supporters is another major source of funds. Each donor gives between $5 and $15,000. Many donors have set up recurring monthly contributions. To spur enthusiasm and spread awareness about the issue of congenital heart defects, Dr.Mani does an annual blogging marathon called the 'Heart Kids Blogathon'. This raises CHD awareness, bringing home the message to a collective audience that runs to millions. Other similar activities include this CHD movie, and observing February 14th every year as 'Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day'. HOW CAN YOU HELP DR.MANI ?By joining the conversation.
