It works.
Yesterday, I sent out a note with the subject line:

The response was very satisfying. It pruned my list
down from 3,246 'subscribers' to now 287 (and counting)
interested 'readers' - including you.
Last time I did this in mid-2003, my list went from
8,200+ to 750 in 48 hours flat. Turned out to be the
