Dental Health Lesson Plan
The earlier children learn about good dental health practices, the more likely they will take these lessons to heart. School is the perfect place to begin such experiences, where they can learn among their peers. Teachers could prepare dental health lesson plans to engage the children in ways that will teach by experience, which is one of the best ways for kids to learn.
It's important for children to know how to brush their teeth and floss properly. Although this is the sort of basic information that every child should get from home at an early age, you can't assume that will be the case. A brief dental health lesson plan, using a tooth brush, floss or string, a shoebox, a rubber glove, a plastic knife, and peanut butter can demonstrate the importance of flossing.
To begin the dental health lesson plan, cut a large image resembling a mouth and teeth from the side of the bottom half of the shoebox, discarding the lid. Taking the floss or string, wrap it around your fingers as if to floss teeth. Demonstrate the correct way to floss, using an up and down motion – not a sawing movement, which can harm gums, on the 'teeth' of the box. After the demonstration, remind them to floss at home as part of their assignment.
The dental health lesson plan continues the following day, as you get one of the children to smear peanut butter all over your gloved fingers, making sure to get some between the fingers. Explain that the fingers represent teeth and the peanut butter is plaque. Have another student try to remove the peanut butter using the toothbrush. The children should be watching this process carefully. Next, have a child try to remove the remaining peanut butter with the floss. Explain how the process of flossing is necessary to properly clean between the teeth, and demonstrate that although a toothbrush is useful in cleaning the surfaces of teeth, floss in needed to get between the teeth to remove plaque and trapped food particles and prevent decay.
This type of dental health lesson plan involves a child's senses and makes a lasting impression. The best kinds of teaching tools are those that clearly demonstrate and reinforce the lessons. Using familiar and fun objects, such as string and peanut butter will keep the interest of the class.
The following day, the dental health lesson plan is about having each of the children bring in a shoebox and make a large mouth and teeth. Have them decorate the boxes and then take the class into another classroom to demonstrate the flossing process to another group of children.
