What Options Are Available In Your Family Dental Insurance?

Most standard family dental insurance policies will cover a couple of routine visits to the dentist, x-rays and dental cleanings. This is the preventive dental care that most family dental insurance companies provide as part of their policy so you will spend less money in the long term.

You see preventive dental care eliminates/lessens the chances of major dental problems from developing later. Almost all dental problems can be prevented from occurring if proper dental care routines are followed. This also lessens the need for really major treatments later on.

This is a win-win situation for both you and the family dental insurance company and works to the benefit of both you and the dental insurance company.

For the more expensive treatment and procedures like root canals, dental implants, dentures and bridges etc, your family dental insurance company will usually pay a percentage of the cost and not the whole amount. And you will be required to pay the rest.

This percentage will vary from say 50 to 80 percent of your total cost and will be mentioned in your family dental insurance policy document if you look closely. The percentage will depend on the type of policy and also the premiums. Higher premiums will get higher percentage pay out usually.

No family dental insurance policy will cover 100 percent of the treatment cost so don't waste your time looking for one. One the other hand if both you and your spouse are covered under both of your company's family dental insurance policies then you could get complete coverage. But you have to confirm this with both and see that they allow the dual coverage option.

Okay, you ask what's point of having a family dental insurance cover? I don't usually go to a dentist. My teeth are quite healthy.

Right. Every thing is fine you never feel the need. But as you get older you will see the result of a life time's abuse of teeth. Suddenly you'll find that half your teeth are rotten from inside, you have cavities and holes in place of tooth and you need root canals for every second tooth.

Don't say not me. It happened to my mother - a religious brusher after every meal with a perfect set of pearly white for 50 years. And suddenly things started going bad with her teeth. It started small but she ignored the signs like any person with perfect teeth.

Since, most major dental problems can cost a lot of money to treat it is safer to have a family dental insurance to reduce the financial burden later when you need to pay. Also, you can only a certain amount on dental treatment per year.

This is called the annual limit. It is rare to have a family dental insurance policy that does not restrict the amount you can spend in a year on dental treatment.

Some low cost dental insurance plans allow only "least expensive alternative treatment"(LEAT) option. This means your dentist has to decide on the least expensive treatment for you if it is the right option for you.

If you opt for the more expensive but better treatment for your condition then you will have the pay the difference in costs. If you this clause in your family dental insurance policy don't buy it. If you can afford the extra premium get the one with out the option.
