It's been a while... I've been busy...

Making sure that what you did - helped save a life.

A child's life.

On October 13th, a little boy got a chance at living longer, healthier - thanks to some wonderful folks around the globe!

3 years back, Master Vinodh was born with a heart defect. A hole in the wall between the lower chambers called a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Without surgery, he would develop heart failure and high lung blood pressure - both complications that would severely shorten his natural lifespan.

And his family couldn't afford an operation.

Some fantastic people - including YOU - helped make a difference. By supporting a 24-hour long blogging marathon I did on July 26-27th, 2003 - and helping raise over $9,000 for my "Dr.Mani's CHD Foundation".

It was out of these funds that Vinodh had his operation.

Fortunately, his parents approached Mrs.Laxmi, Manager of the Charitable Wing at a large heart hospital in India where until recently I had been working. She contacted me.

Dear Dr.S,

Now I have a child Master Vinodh whose details have been sent to you already. To give you a brief history of this child, Vinodh's mother is very poor who is getting only Rs. 2,000/- ( MY NOTE: that's around $40 - YES, just forty bucks!) per month. She cannot raise any money. They have no place to live. I feel so much for this child. I have told the mother that when I get a sponsor I shall inform them. I am still trying. Hence if you could help this child. (Whatever you feel) I shall be grateful. This child needs VSD and the package given is Rs. 65,000/-. I shall wait for your reply. I have discussed this case with Dr. CJ.

Yours faithfully,
Laxmi

I'm delighted to be able to share with you this fantastic news - that Vinodh has had a successful operation and is making a smooth, uneventful recovery in hospital.

The list of people I need to thank for making this possible is VERY long. I've posted an acknowledgement of individual contributions on the sidebar of this page. It hasn't been updated INTENTIONALLY since then - I've wanted the first post since the Blogathon to be about the good news of the first successful operation, but had no idea it would take this long!

As I wrote in a note to my friend, who has been one of my strongest supporters for several years now,

> I feel really very thrilled about finally getting the first
> concrete step in my very ambitious dream fulfilled. 2 or 3
> years back, I wouldn't have believed this could happen.
> Now, I don't believe there's ANYTHING we *can't* get to
> happen!

To which he replied:

> True, true. You just have to get the right people involved,
> and anything can happen.
>
> VERY cool news, Mani.

Sure is cool, isn't it?

And I sure HAVE got the right people involved! :)

A HUGE BIG THANK YOU to every single one of you for your support with this effort.
